Dorothy Jane McCarty, 96, of Columbus, died Sunday, June 24, 2018 at her daughter's home.

Dorothy spent her life as a homemaker and took care of her nine children. She enjoyed reading and being with her family.

Born on May 7, 1922 in Franklin, Dorothy was the daughter of Gideon and Lillian Smith Johnson. She married Alfred E. McCarty on June 4, 1938, and he preceded her in death on August 3, 1976.

Survivors include children, Dottie Hill of Waynesville, Rosalie Moss of Hope, Carolyn (Darrel) Burbridge of Hope, and Randy (Barb) McCarty of Hartsville; 28 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; 30 great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary Burks and Shirley (Paul) Sewell, both of Franklin; and several nieces and nephews.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her children, Larry McCarty, Sharon Sue Rea. Jerry McCarty, Sherry Coffman, and Terry McCarty; brothers, Paul, Gilbert, and Jr.; and sister, Margaret Cantrell.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday at noon with Randy McCarty officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of service. Burial will follow at Flat Rock Baptist Cemetery.
