Eddie L. Harvey, lifetime resident of Bartholomew County, 46 years at Newbern passed away Tuesday November 25, 2008 at 12:20 pm at Columbus Regional Hospital after a 3 year illness. He was born January 20, 1932, in Hope, IN. Eddie graduated from Clifford High School in 1950. He took several classes at IUPUC. He joined the Indiana National Guard for a year. He went to work at Cummins Engine Co. in May of 1950. Eddie joined the Air Force in 1951. He was a Staff Sgt. in the Korean War in the United States Air Force. He served as a cryptographer for two years and flew currier from Missauwa, Japan to Korea many times. He was honorably discharged in 1956. He came back to Columbus and returned to Cummins Engine Co. where he worked as an inspector on V-8 Blovk Line and as a Manufacturing Co-Ordinator until April of 1987, when he retired after working there for 37 years. He worked part-time as a computer engravor at Columbus Awards and Engraving. He also worked at Antique Restoration and at Hoosier Parts. He married Carolyn A. Harvey June 25, 1960 at Taylorsville Methodist Church. Mr. Harvey was an avid Table Tennis Player. He and a bubby won the Far East Doubles Championship tournament in 1954, while he was in Japan. Since then, he played for years in the White River Parks Tournaments and Senior Tournaments and many league tournaments at Columbus and at Cummins. He was one of the founders of the Columbus Area Table Tennis Association and stayed active in it through 2005. He played soft-ball, golf, horse-shoe, and fished and played several string instruments. He loved camping with his family and many good friends. He was a loving, devoted husband, father,grandfather, brother and uncle. He was an active member of the Newbern United Methodist Church for 45 years and had served on several committees and was a former trustee there. Memorials may be made to Newbern United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, a son Anthony "Tony" (Sandy) Harvey of Vernon,a daughter Kelly (Andy) Kennedy of Hope. He also has 4 grandchildren, Connor,Chloe, andGraham Kennedy of Hope and Cole Harvey of Vernon. He is survived by one brother Robert(Velma) Harvey of Hope and several much loved nieces and nephews, whom he was has always been close to He was preceded in death by his parents Edna (Stater) and Archie F. Harvey, a sisterLetha Ackerman , a brother Vernon "Bub" Harvey, infant siblings Billie and Betty, hisgrandparents . Eddie was also preceded in death by a beloved niece Jennifer Murphy Dailey. Funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Norman Funeral Home with the Rev.Dr. Morris Hannah officiating. Calling will be on Saturday from 4 to 8 p.m . Burial will beat Hope Moravian Cemetery.
