Elvin Lee Shaum, 78, of Hope, Indiana, formerly of Leetonia, Ohio, passed away at Ashford Place in Shelbyville, Indiana on October 15, 2025 at 4:28 p.m.

He was born November 1, 1946 in Salem, Ohio to the late Harvey and Susannah (Van Pelt) Shaum.

On September 5, 1970, he married Mary Martin, daughter of the late Amos K. and Lydia (Martin) Martin. They shared 55 years together. She survives.

Surviving are three sons and two daughters, Galen (Kathy) Shaum of Hyde Park, VT, Dale (Dorcas) Shaum of Hartsville, IN, Lila (Leroy) Fox of Hope, IN, Carla (Lamar) Fox of Greensburg, IN and Steven (Dorcas) Shaum of Columbiana, OH. He is also survived by 28 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are four brothers and one sister; Virgil (Sally) Shaum of Apple Creek, OH, his twin brother, Melvin (Dorothy) Shaum of Snover, MI, Kenneth (Arlene) Shaum of Nappanee, IN, Raymond (Faye) Shaum of Orville, OH, Esther Mae Shaum of Columbiana, OH; six sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters; Jason Shaum, Nelson Shaum, Edith Heatwole, and Kathryn Bender; brother-in-law, Myron Heatwole; son, Brent Shaum; grandson, Kadryn Shaum; and a great-grandson, Frederic Weaver.

He was a member of Pleasant View Mennonite Church.

He lived most of his life in Columbiana, Ohio area.

He worked as a Dairy farmer and milk hauler. He ran his last load of milk August 2023.

He very much enjoyed his children and grandchildren.

A viewing will be held on Sunday, October 19 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Hawcreek Mennonite Church, 15411 SR 9 Hope, IN. A viewing will be held on Tuesday, October 20 at Mt. Joy Mennonite Church in Leetonia, OH from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the church. Burial will follow at Pleasant View Mennonite Church Cemetery in Columbiana, OH.
