John Perry Simmons, 95 of Columbus died Monday December
28, 2015 at his home.
He was a retired farmer.
He was a member of the Hope United Methodist Church where he
served as treasurer and was on the Board of Trustees. He was a
member of Bartholomew County Plan Commission, Bartholonew
County Board of Appeals, Bartholomew County Council,
Flatrock- Hawcreek School Board and Bartholomew County Farm
Bureau. He was a 4-H leader and a little league baseball coach.
He was a sports fan following the Yankees, Cinncinati Reds and
IU basketball. He enjoyed selling his produce at the Farmer's Market,
playing cards and scrabble.
Born March 18, 1920 in Columbus, John Perry was the son of
Charles H. and Nora Norton Simmons. He graduated from Clifford
High School in 1938 and attended Indiana University for 3 years.
He married Gladys H. Glick September 28, 1941 at the Flat Rock
Methodist Church Parsonage and she survives. They celebrated
their 74th wedding anniversary in 2015.
John Perry's funeral will be Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at the Hope
United Methodist Church with Rev. Warren Kirk officiating. Visitation
will be from 9 a.m. until service time at the church. Burial will follow
at Hope Moravian Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be donated to Hope
United Methodist Church or Our Hospice of South Central Indiana
through the funeral home.
Survivors include his wife, Gladys of Columbus; children, Jim
(JoEllen)Simmons of Homer Glen, Illinois, Ron (Adele) Simmons of
La Quinta, CA,Don (Roseann) Simmons of Fort Wayne, IN, Larry
(Kathie) Simmons of Muncie, IN, Betty Ann (Curtis) Garrett of
Greenwood, IN, Catherine Simmons of Columbus, IN and Bonnie
Baute of Hope, IN; 12 grandchildren,19 great grandchildren and
2 great-great grandchildren and caregiver, Nicos Panciocco.
John Perry was preceded in death by his parents; a son,
Tommy Simmons;a brother, William Simmons and a son-in-law,
John Baute.
