He was retired from farming.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, is a member of the American Legion and helped establish the veteran's memorial in Hope.
Lewis had been a member and past Master of several area Masonic lodges for 75 years, as well as Shelbyville Shriners and Shriners International. Lewis served as a deacon and trustee of the Flat Rock Christian Church and taught clowning as part of the church's outreach.
His hobbies were photography, clowning and traveling which he didn't start until age 78.

. at Norman Funeral Home in Hope with Rev. Jerry Crouse and Pastor Brian Ebersold officiating. Visitation will be
Monday from 4-8 p.m
. and on Tuesday from 12:30 p.m. until service time at the funeral home. Burial will be at Hope Moravian Cemetery.
Born November 8, 1913 near Hope, Lewis was the son of William and Bertha Essex Surber. He first married Dorothy wasson and she preceded him in death. He then married Marcene L. Wagoner October 21, 1972 and she survives.
In liew of flowers, memorial contributions may be donated to the donor's choice of charity.
Survivors include his wife Marcene of Shelbyville and
several nieces and nephews.
Lewis was preceded in death by his parents; first wife Dorothy; brothers Carter and Kenneth Surber and sisters Martha Surber Lucas and Ruth Surber.
