Ralph T. Cooper,89 of Indianapolis passed away Saturday May 1, 2010 at his home
He was born on April 28, 1921 in Detroit, Michigan to the late Loren "Curly" and Edith Stucker Cooper. As a youth the family returned to Indiana and he graduated from Hope High School in 1939 and from Indiana University in 1942. While at IU he lettered in baseball. He also played first base in fast pitch softball in the Columbus area. In 1940 his team, the Columbus Arvins won the Indiana Fast Pitch Softball tourney and advanced to the quarter finals of the National Tourney in St. Louis, Missouri.
Ralph had been a CPA, and retired as controller of Baldwin & Lyons, Inc. He had previously been employed in public accounting with Roy J. Pile and Company and then as treasuer of McCormick Lumber and Building Material Co.
He was a 50 year member of Pleasant Masonic Lodge in Acton, Scottish Rite and Murat Shrine. He was a member of Franklin Township Historical Society. He was a 60 year member of the New Bethel Baptist Church where he held many offices including clerk, deacon and for many years was local rexpense treasurer.
During WW II he served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy aboard the Leedstown , an attack transport, as disbursing and supply officer in the South Pacific campaign. His ship
was involved in six invasions of Japanese held islands.
He is survived by his loving family, wife Mary Alice Thayer Cooper. They celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary in March 2010, Also surviving are chidlren Nancy (Kenny) Chandler of Hope, Marilyn Fox of Greenwood , David ( Ramsey) Cooper of Clayton, Patricia (Robert) Marlin of Indianapolis and Thomas (Susan) Cooper of Schererville; ten grandchildrren and nine great grandchildren.
He was preceded in desath by his parents.
The funeral will be conducted at 11:00 Wednesday at Hope Moravian Church with Dr. Henry Hawkins officiating. Calling with be Tuesday at Norman Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. and at the church on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m unitl service time. Burial will be at Hope Moravian Cemetery with military gravesite rites
Memorial contributions may be given to St, Francis Hospice or New Bethel Baptist Church thru the funeral home.
