Obituary

Richard James Stanfield , 56 of Lawton, Oklahoma a former Columbus resident
died January 8 in Kuwait.
Richard was a retired Sergeant First Class with the U.S. Army having served in
Germany, Korea and in the Desert Storm in the Middle East and in Bosnia and Honduras.
He had been employed for three years in Iraq for the Comtech Systems Co. of Maryland installing satellite systems in military vechicles and instructing military personnel
in their use. He was returning to Iraq via Kuwait following a short holiday visit with his family,
when he died.
He was born Jan. 6, 1952 in Marion, IN. to James Henry and Helen Marie
Stanfield . He moved to Columbus in 1953 and graduated from Columbus High School in
1970. He married Deborah Kay Smallwood in October 1974 and she survives.
Other survivors include daughters, Melissa Zermeno, Sarah and Emily
Stanfield all of Lawton , Ok. and Jennifer (Jose) Santiago of Hope Mills,N.C.; grandchildren,
Derek and Deston Stanfield of Lawton and Nadia, Cristian and Yesenia Santiago of Hope
Mills; father and stepmother James H, and Patricia Stanfield of Columbus; brothers,
David ( Connie) Stanfield of Queen Creek, AZ., Daryl (Wanda) Stanfield of Avon, IN,
and Allen (Sue) Stanfield of Decatur, AL.; sisters, Janet (John) Seery of Katy, TX, and
Linda (Kenneth) Taulman of Lafayette, IN , as well as a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother and a nephew James Allen
Stanfield.
The funeral will be conducted at 2:00 p.m Monday at Sandy Hook United
Methodist Church with Pastor Steve Russell officiating. Calling will be at the church on Sunday from 6 to 8 pm. Burial will be at Garland Brook cemetery with graveside military rites by the Bartholomew County Color Guard.
