Obituary

Ruby Brashears, 90, of Hope, died Feb. 25, 2013 at 9:30 a.m. at Miller's Merry Manor in Hope, IN.

Ruby was born June 13, 1922 in Whitesburg, Ky. to John and Polly Ann Hampton Brashears. Her father died in 1926 in a coal mining accident. Her mother then married Arthur Banks who raised Ruby as his daughter.

Ruby worked in the Baltimore, Md shipyards during World War II as a "Rosie the Riveter". In the late 1950's until the mid 1970's she, along with Arthur and Polly Ann, ran Banks' Grocery in Rugby, IN. After the store closed, Ruby worked at J. C. Penny until her retirement.

Ruby is survived by a son, Jack (Wendi) Banks of Indianapolis, IN; grandchildren, Shelli (Brent) Ramey of Greensburg, IN, Jeff (Amy) Banks of Hope, Jim (Lori) Banks of Beaufort, NC, Tellisa Banks of Orting, WA, Rubie (Ryan) Schaaf of Belfair, WA, Nick (Adriane) and Joe Bruner of Indianapolis, IN; great grandchildren, Shayne (Trish) Britton and Cody Britton both of Columbus, IN, Logan Ramey of Greensburg, IN, Collin, Eli and Maggie Banks of Hope, IN, Josie and Jamie Banks of Beaufort, NC, Dominic and Darien Guarin and Aidan Fredrickson of Orting, WA, Jonathon, Jayden and Jacob Day and Ryln Schaaf of Belfair, WA. She was expecting her first great-great grandchild in July. She is also survived by brothers, Carl and Carol Banks of FL., Tony (Kathy) Banks of Arizona and a sister, Estelle Scheidt of Columbus, IN and many many nieces and nephews.

Ruby was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Harlan Banks and Paul Brashears; sisters, Inez Hogg and Bessie Amburgy and a daughter-in-law, Mary Banks.

In keeping with Ruby's wishes, cremation is planned. A memorial service will be held Friday, March 1, 2013 at 12:00 p.m. at Norman Funeral Home in Hope with Rev. Gerald Hancock officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be donated to Hope Food Bank or Miller's Merry Manor Activities Fund.
