Samuel Henry Dodd went home to be with our Lord July 23, 2026. Born in Hope, IN on April 13th, 1932 to Joe C. Dodd and Irene Reed Dodd. Sam was one of six children.
Sam graduated from Hope High School in 1950 and enrolled in the U.S. Navy where he was quartermaster on the USS Leonard F. Mason. He married Joyce M. Hull on June 18th, 1955 in Las Vegas, NV while still in the U.S. Navy and shared 38 years of marriage before her death to cancer in 1994. While in the U.S. Navy, he learned many skills including navigation and electronics. After an honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy, Sam returned to Hope, Indiana and owned a farm, before selling it and moving to Indianapolis to start Cumberland Radio & TV business in 1959 and just recently retired from that career. He also installed several antennas towers—some as tall at 100'—and repaired US Defense monitors for minuteman capsules all across the country in the 70's & 80's. He was a beekeeper for many decades and mentored others. He was a member of Indiana Nut Growers.
Sam was a born-again Christian, belonging to a Christian church in Indianapolis.
Sam and Joyce had two twin sons, Terry (& Cheryl) Dodd, of Columbus, IN and Larry Dodd of Newberry, MI along with three grandsons, Paul and Phillip Dodd and Nathan and Nicholas Dodd; and sister, JoAnn Schwartzkopf of Westport.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and siblings, Tom Dodd, Sophie Major, Helen Dailey, and Lola Sweeney.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, August 3 at 2:00 p.m. at Norman Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Hope Moravian Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be given to donor’s choice of veterans organization.
