Shirley L. Whittington, 69 of Hope, passed away Wed. December 10, 2008 at Hospice of South Central IN Inpatient Facility at 3:30 pm surrounded by loving family and friends. Her life was well lived as a witness to God's grace and love.
She retired as Postmaster of the Hope Post Office serving longer than any postmaster in the history of the office. After retiring from postmaster she worked at the Hope Carpet Centre.
She was a member of the Hope United Methodist Church and the National Assoc. of Postmasters Retired.
Shirley loved working with her flowers and spending lots of time with her grandchildren. She loved to cook, travel and buy christmas presents.
The funeral will be conducted Saturday December 13 at 10:30 am at the Hope United Methodist Church with Rev. Dave Galbraith officiating. Viewing will be Friday from 3:00-8:00 at the church and from 9:00 am until service time at the church on Saturday. Burial will be at Hope Moravian Cemetery. Born January 31, 1939 in Brown Co., Shirley was the daughter of Oscar & Anna Miller Smith. She married Richard "Dick" Whittington on March 20, 1958 at the East Columbus United Methodist Church and he survives.
Surviving along with her husband are children, Forrest Jeffrey(Vicky) and Joseph(Janice) Whittington of Hope and Julie Colley of Columbus; sisters, Loretta Baker and Sandy Cox of Nashville, IN; a brother, Phillip Smith of Columbus; grandchildren Rhett, Rhakalee, Wesley & Wyatt Whittington, all of Hope and Joshua, Douglas, Matthew & Jacob Burbrink of Columbus.
She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers and a sister.
