William “Bill” Robert Compton Jr. entered heaven’s gates on May 7th, 2026, surrounded by his loving wife and children. Bill was born December 20th, 1961, in Columbus, Indiana, to William Robert Compton Sr. and Leola (Zeigler) Compton. He was the fifth of six children. Bill was born and raised in Petersville with his three brothers and two sisters. He graduated from Columbus East High School in 1980.
Bill was married to Rhonda (Snyder) St. Clair from August 29th, 1981, to 2004. He married Paula June (Keller) Compton on March 12th, 2005.
Bill enlisted in the United States Air Force and served his country from 1981 to 1985 as an Integrated Avionics Components Specialist, working on F-15 fighter jets. While serving, he welcomed a son, Aaron Compton and after returning to Columbus he welcomed a daughter, Emily (Compton) Fleetwood. Bill never met a stranger, and many affectionately knew him as “Uncle Bill,” a title he truly treasured.
As an active member of church and the community, Bill combined his love of motorcycles with his faith through the Christian Motorcyclists Association (CMA). He served in many roles with Wheels of Faith Chapter 533, including President, Vice President, Chaplain, and Road Captain. He also enjoyed watching TV and often joked that it would be his “retirement job” when he turned 70.
Bill was employed by Cummins Engine Company and enjoyed working third shift at the Walesboro plant as a Continuous Improvement Leader and Shop Steward. He was widely known for his creative problem-solving abilities and infectious, fun-loving personality. Bill also used his time on the shop floor at Cummins to share his faith with others.
Bill is survived by his wife, Paula June Compton; his son, Aaron (Michelle) Compton; his daughter, Emily (Cody) Fleetwood; his grandchildren: Aireanna, Landen, Ivy, and Brantley Compton, and Zoe and Renlee Fleetwood; Brothers Tony (Kathy Compton) Eddie (Joann) Compton, sister Judy Mize, along with several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by both parents, Bill Sr. and Leola Compton, also his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Paul and Roberta Keller; Sister Susan (Jim) Huey and brother Terry Compton.
