Obituary

William "Bernard" Hull, 94, of Columbus passed away on Tuesday, October 24, 2023 at IU Health Methodist Hospital.  Born on September 14, 1929 in Hope, Bernard was the son of Frank and Mary Louise Woehler Hull.  He married Monika Martin on June 13, 1960 in Germany.

Bernard retired from the military after serving in the United States Army from February 1951 to July 1971 and received two Purple Hearts for his service during the Vietnam War.  After returning to the US, he worked on the Redstone Missile Project.  Following his military career, he worked at Cummins Engine company for 15 years and then returned to Cummins as a contract security guard for several years.

A lifelong member of the First Baptist Church in Hope, he was a man of great faith.  He was also a formidable chess and billiards competitor and a faithful friend to several rescue dogs.  As a husband, brother, and uncle, Bernard enriched the lives of all who knew him.  He will be missed.

Survivors include his wife, Monika, of Columbus; brother, Tom (Rita) Hull of Hope; nieces and nephews, whom he dearly loved, including Cindy (Floyd) Rutan, Terry (Cheryl) Dodd, Larry Dodd, Jennie (Charlie) Smith, Holly (Eric) Elkins, Sunny Hull, JT (Jennifer) Hull; sister-in-law, Wally Peterson, brother-in-law, Sam Dodd; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Joyce Dodd; brother, Gene Hull; and nephew, Frank Hull.

A private graveside service will be held at Hope Moravian Cemetery with military rites being conducted by the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard.
